Hi guys, I thought I made a post about my experiences with my Macbook Pro so far. After quite some puzzling, it is all workable now so maybe I can help someone here with setting it up.

System specs
- Macbook Pro 2018 Touch Bar 13,3' with i5 (8259U) processor, 256 GB SSD and 16 GB RAM, Intel Iris 655 iGPU
- macOS 10.13.6 and Windows 10 through Boot Camp
- AOS AG271UG 4K monitor with G-sync
- Crucial MX500 525 GB SSD (in Sharkoon USB-c external case)
- laptop cooling pad with added Logitech USB wireless mouse.

Installation steps

How to get macOS 10.13.6 working.
0. don't connect any usb devices, certainly not the eGPU
1. Install all updates from the macOS App Store, especially the 2018 July patch from Apple that fixes the throttling issues.
2. download the script and follow al instructions on the site here.
3. turn off the mac. Connect all external USB devices and eGPU and you're good to go. Works almost out of the box! One warning: don't disconnect or connect (hotplug) the eGPU when the PC is on. This causes macOS crashes.

How to get Boot Camp working with Windows 10
This guide only works to install the GPU using an external monitor. It works quite well, except for som strict rules that you always have to follow:
- NEVER add or remove USB-c devices from the MBP when it's turned on. It causes a hard crash. All USB devices work fine if connected before powering up the system
- ALWAYS leave the eGPU out when booting (or rebooting) Windows. Plug it in exactly after the Apple logo disappears and within the first millisecond when seeing the Windows logo. Waiting longer than this will cause a non-working G-sync, waiting more than one second will give you a blue windows logo on your MBP internal screen and random system crashes. So the faster, the better.

Step-by-step installation:
0. don't connect any usb devices, certainly not the eGPU
1. Go to Windows Configuration screen; Energy Settings and edit the Energy Schedule. Go to Advanced energy settings, USB Settings, selective USB, and disable both battery and net power here.
2. Completely turn off your machine. Connect the Gaming Box to your external monitor and restart the pc; plug the thunderbolt cable from the Aorus the first second you see the windows logo. See more info above.
3. Install the 384.76 drivers from the Gigabyte Gaming Box 1080 driver site. After it is installed; your external monitor should start up.
4. Reboot the system (unplug GPU when its off and plugin @ windows logo!) and go to device manager, go to your graphics card, right click to download the most recent Windows Update drivers. When finished, reboot again.
5. You should then be able to activate g-sync in the nvidia configuration screen.
Benchmarks
With games, my experiences are as follows:
PUBG @4K, all ultra, shadows very low, foliage 80, without antialiasing: around 60FPS
Tomb Raider 2013 @4K, everything ultra, antialiasing turned off: benchmark 61.9FSP average
Civilization VI @4K, everything ultra: 59 FPS steady

I ran two benchmarks, Unigine Superposition @4k and @1440p. The results are as follows:

Until this far, I am not disappointed at all. I expected to game @1440p but until now, 4K runs fine even in demanding titles. Even the benchmark runs at acceptable framerates at 4K. When comparing online, a desktop GTX 1080 will get 7500 maximum, so my score of 6000 is in line with expectations: 20% lower then the desktop. Let's hope future Thunderbolt 3 / Apple drivers will speed this up a little bit, say to 10% less then a desktop and thus full 4K gaming at 60FPS without compromise. Then I would be really satisfied.

Comments & known bugs
To summarize, already a playable and beautiful experience but we're not there yet. Apple / Intel Boot Camp drivers are just recently released for the Macbook Pro 2018 but still have some issues
- Nvidia G-Sync only works when you put in the Thunderbolt the millisecond the Windows logo appears!
- unplugging and plugging your eGPU in the system has to be done precisely
- plugging in or plugging out usb-c periphals causes your macOS or Windows 10 Boot Camp setup to crash immediately. Solution; plug in everything you need when the system is powered-off.

As you see this setup seems to work quite out of the box without much difficulty, as long as you follow certain steps. Let's hope Apple and Intel will fix these issues soon with new drivers.

I have a similar setup to yours @DeNachtWacht, I'm using the MacBook Pro 2018 15' i9 32GB 1TB paired with a Razer Core X that holds a GTX 1080, everything works fine except for a few things, on bootcamp I'm having issues with the pheriperals I have connected via a HyperDrive ( https://www.hypershop.com/collections/usb-type-c/products/hyperdrive-slim-usb-c-hub-for-macbook-ultrabook-chromebook-pc-usb-c-devices). I have made a post on this forum regarding the issue, but it seems that it shares the bandwidth with the eGPU which causes huge performance drops on usage of the connected keyboard/mouse. I have tried to connect the HyperDrive on the other side of the device, so that it doesn't share the bandwidth, however my MacBook's internal screen just stays black and the connected monitors don't get any signal. I'll definitely try the USB power options 'fix' you shared on here, to see if that resolves things.

And on Mac OS I get a really awful performance with the eGPU setup, and it's being caused by Chromium based applications, take a look at https://github.com/learex/macOS-eGPU/issues/18 . So this renders my eGPU setup useless for now 🙁 . I hope I can figure it out soon!

1. adding USB periphals crashes because of Energy settings. Go to Energy Settings and edit the schedule. Go to advanced energy settings, USB Settings, selective USB, and disable both battery and net power here.
2. Connect the gaming box to power supply and to your external monitor. completely turn off your machine. restart the pc and turn in the thunderbolt cable from the Aorus the moment you see the windows logo. You always have to connect the Gaming Box this way; connecting it when powered off causes errors with the integrated Intel 655 graphics card, and hotplugging it while in windows causes your PC to chrash.

Btw, I tested this, updated the energy settings and plugged in the cable after the Windows logo appeared, and now my setup works : ). Really happy! Thanks!

@denachtwacht rEFInd will help you keep the iGPU activated during Windows booting process and allow internal display acceleration with the eGPU. If you'd like to give it a try, read my step-by-step procedure. In that post I disabled a Thunderbolt 3 controller to resolve error 12 for AMD eGPU. You don't need to do that for Nvidia eGPU. Simply install rEFInd, mount the EFI partition then enable spoof_osx_version 10.9.

Thanks for the reply. But for now, I don't need the internal monitor to work in Boot Camp and am afraid these scripts will break when a new NVIDIA driver or Windows Update arrives. Besides that the next month I am on holidays so I don't need the macbook a lot until Mojave arrives. I really hope there are some eGPU surprises in the pipeline for the Apple September Keynote.

So I'll just wait for Apple and NVIDIA to update their Boot Camp Thunderbolt and GPU drivers for now. If it doesn't get fixed, I'll start playing with these scripts.

I have almost same setup as you, but bootcamp not able to detect my gaming box.

My device:
Mid 2018 13' Macbook Pro Touch Bar i7 + 16GB + 512GB
Aorus Gaming Box 1080.

Software:
macOS 10.13.6
Windows10 ver. 1803

I do the same as you do, the gaming box is lighting on after bootup, but I'm not able to find the GPU device from 'Device Manager', and when Install GPU driver it says not compatible hardware existed and not able to install. Which port did you connect your gaming box? I tried each one, no one is working.

Should I disable something or try the DSDT override? BTW, I'm able to detect gaming box at macOS.

My card also doesn’t show up in device manager. But other than that it works perfectly.

Some tips:
- The most important thing is to remove all USB devices from both the eGPU and the other 3 ports when installing the eGPU. Did you do this?
- did you correctly install all Apple Boot Camp drivers and update them using Apple software updater in Windows?
- your eGPU should be disconnected the moment you hit the power button of your Mac when booting to Boot Camp Windows 10. Hold the cable close to the Thunderbolt port and plug it in right at the moment the Apple logo switches to the Windows logo. You have to do this every time the MacBook boots to Windows. Thanks for the tips, I actually did every same detail as you do, it still not working. 😥
The GTX1080 device should at least shows in the 'Device Manager' - 'Display adapters'.

I tried an old version of windows, build 1703, it's able to detect eGPU, but I meet error12 and not able to adjust brightness of the screen.

I had a 2017 15` mbp that simply wouldn't recognize the thunderbolt 3 devices on windows bootcamp. I had to get it to Apple care and they changed the logic board. Not saying its your case, but you can try this.

The USB hub in gaming box is working well through thunderbolt3, so thunderbolt itself seems no issues in my side.
I'm crazy try everything waste so many time, it's time to give up now.

I'm able to recognize my Gaming box in win 10 1803 now.
I just power disconnect it for one day and a night. seems something inside the box is reset to good state.
Now the only thing I meet is the 'error 12' now.

GPU not detectable possible because something wrong with my gaming box 1080, I do a hardware reset by 'remove the power cable and leave it for 24 hours', then it is recognized in bootcamp. I actually didn't known what really happened 😐 .

For the 'error 12' issue, I follow this guide https://egpu.io/forums/pc-setup/fix-dsdt-override-to-correct-error-12/#post-1598 but the modified dsdt.aml I direct use the file I mentioned before, I'm not able to decompile it from my machine, it shows some error like below.

Hi DeNactwacht and droidfu, I read a lot of issues in this post with aorus gaming box 1080 and macbook pro 13 2018. The issues are mainly bootcamp setup on macbook and integration of aorus box with macbook pro to enable gsync.
I recently purchased a Macbook pro 2018 13 inch and looking forward to have an egpu setup for gaming.
Reading issues with aorus gaming box and macbook, do you think should I go for another enclosure? Or is it the case that all available enclosures are having similar problems?
As experienced egpu members, which enclosure would you suggest me that will grant the best compatibility with macbook with bootcamp?

I want to get a 13' MBP 2018 but am concerned about throttling in Boocamp.

I has a 2018 15' that was returned due to massive heat and throttling.

My guess is that the 2.3 option would be the best to help avoid throttling.

How are you all getting around the issue with the 2018 MBP?

It depends on your definition of throttling. The crazy sawtooth up and down from max turbo to 400-800mhz is gone now. My 2018 13 inch i7 runs around 4-4.1ghz in bootcamp while playing Elder Scrolls Online, World of Warcraft, Diablo 3, No Man's Sky, Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice, all of which typically run 1-2 threads maxing out one or two cores, and several other threads using less on the rest, with typical total cpu usage around 30-50 percent.

When the cpu goes above 75 percent load the clock goes down to about 3.7, when the cpu is fully loaded running cinebench or corona benchmark, frequency drops to around 3.0 to 3.4 ghz with occaisional drops down to 2.9 or so.

Technically that is throttling, but the performance is overall comparable to previous generation 15' 45W 4 core MacBook Pros. Sustained load frequencies under full load are still a little higher in MacOS, but as of the supplemental update 2 yesterday, performance is similar for me between bootcamp and macos and proper thermal management seems to be achieved in both.

The patch Apple issued addressed Bootcamp thermals? That's great news and have not seen any reports on this.

Was going to go with the 2.3, but maybe I will spring for the 2.7. Any thoughts on processor choice?

I know my 2108 2.6/16/512 MBP was all over the place. Even post patch..

It was, until the second supplemental system update earlier this week. Thermal management fixes for windows were not in the first update, they only fixed them in MacOS. Performance in boot camp is now very close to MacOS, I get nearly identical cinebench and geekbench scores, and slightly worse scores in Corona Benchmark. Only real outstanding issues I am still experiencing are due to the audio drivers for the T2 chip in boot camp, I am assuming a fix will be forthcoming eventually.

I don't have direct experience with the i5, but from what I've seen in benchmarks, the $300 upcharge is a bit much, and really dependent on your use case. Under full load, i.e. video encoding, 3d rendering, heavy heavy multitasking, the 2 chips are very close in performance. For most gaming, because they only fully load 1-2 cores, the i7 can turbo quite a bit higher and might be worth it. All the games I listed above hover around 4-4.1ghz which is probably 400 MHz higher than you would see on the i5. As games become more cpu intensive (something like Civ VI maybe?) the performance difference shrinks. Also should be faster/more responsive for light usage like web browsing, tho I am not sure how much this would be noticeable.

For me, the mmo games I typically play tend to be poorly multithreaded but CPU frequency sensitive, and I guess it's kinda worth it. In fact framerates are often 10-20 percent higher than they were on my prior 6700HQ equipped 15' which maxxed out at about 3.1ghz regardless of how many cpu cores were used.

Macbooks For 2018

Here's my dilemma…

I have the opportunity to pick up a 2018 13' 2.3/16gb/1TB for $2,000 shipped.

This would make getting the 2.7 more than $300 even on the used market. I like the storage of 1TB and if the 2.3 wont drag too far behind, I guess it would be a good tradeoff.

Currently, I have a maxed out X1 Carbon 6th gen. This little sucker works really well with eGPUs and the clocks are well above between 3-3.5 when gaming.

I don't understand the 28w in the MBP vs the 15w in the X1. The X1 can maintain its clocks. So, what does the 28w chip do better than the 15w?

If it weren't for OSX, I would be not even thinking of ditching the Carbon. In my opinion, its the best option on the market for PC's and the keyboard is KILLER!

The latest X1 is exactly what I always wanted my Sony Vaio SVZ13 to be. Too bad it had to use lightpeak for that external dock of theirs back then. 🙂

As soon as the windows dial starts to turn when loading up, that’s when I plug in the eGPU.

I have had issues doing it later in the sequence or after booting.

Make sure your using the top right port.

that's normal hot plugging I do. the 2nd option just new discovery I made recently

Anyways might try your suggestion using top-right port coz I been using left-bottom port (coz more convenient on my setup) at the moment.
